A story about the powerful effects of love and food that includes recipes.

For Kids and Families

* Chocolate: Riches from the Rainforest by Robert Burleigh
This book is intended to complement the exhibition and was developed in association with The Field Museum. Packed with fun facts and lavish color photos, this is a good read for middle to older children.

The Cocoa Commotion: A Carmen Sandiego Mystery by Melissa Peterson
A great read for middle to older children. Lots of information about chocolate, cacao, and geography woven into the mystery plot.

* Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Classic tale for middle and older readers about a boy’s adventures in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

* How Monkeys Make Chocolate by Adrian Forsyth
For middle to older readers. Informative in an engaging way.

Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry: The Story of Your Favorite Flavors by Bonnie Busenberg
For middle to older readers. Good sections on each plant-derived flavor as well as how humans taste food and the chemistry behind it.

Cocoa Ice by Diana Appelbaum
Works well for a range of ages and especially for reading aloud. A story about two girls who live in different parts of the world during the era of schooner trade.

2000 feature film version of the novel by Joanne Harris (see Books). Starring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, and Johnny Depp.

* Like Water for Chocolate, directed by Alfonso Arau
1993 feature film version of the novel by Laura Esquivel (see Books). Starring Marco Leonardi and Lumi Cavazos.

The Chocolate War, directed by Keith Gordon
Based on Robert Cormier’s classic book. Struggles for power at a prep school ensue when one freshman refuses to take part in a chocolate bake sale. Starring John Glover, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, and Wally Ward.
