Humans evolved through the same unpredictable process as every living thing. Through this evolutionary process, we see that our nearest relatives are apes, which first emerged during the Tertiary Period.

We also belong to the animal group called hominids, which includes not only modern humans, but many other hominid species that once lived on Earth. From our earliest Austrolopithecine ancestors to our most recent Neanderthal neighbors, we all share traits of the hominid family.

To find out more about hominids and their history, select from the following:

Basic Overview
Examine the evidence of hominid evolution and learn how scientists distinguish between fossils of apes and various hominid species. You’ll learn about the biological and cultural traits that set us apart from our nearest primate relatives.

Image Gallery
Take a peek at pictures of your ancient ancestors. You’ll see fossils of some famous hominids such as “Lucy” and “Turkana boy,” and you can check out tools, grave goods, and art left behind by early hominids.

Evolutionary Essentials
Discover three key trends in hominid evolution that brought humankind into the modern era.

Featured Scientist
Meet a Field Museum scientist who studies hominids and other primates, and view a video of his work that show us how DNA reveals our relationship with Neanderthals.
