• Evolutionary Essentials
Around 248 million years ago, Earth was recovering from one of the greatest mass extinctions in its history. From the survivors arose new life forms that were so different that scientists recognized it as the beginning of a new era: the Mesozoic Era. This 183-million-year era spans the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods.
Often called the Age of the Dinosaur, this is the time when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. But during this era, other major evolutionary highlights included:
The emergence of mammals, from which humans eventually evolved.
The emergence of birds, which are the living dinosaurs of today.
The emergence of flowing plants, which created rich and varied habitats where new forms of life could evolve and diversify. |
