An intense ice age began during the Quaternary Period—and it still continues today. The changing climate and the formation of new land bridges during this time dramatically affected the evolution of mammals.

Ice age mammals both strange and familiar roamed the Earth and staked out new territories. Our own species moved among them, altering the planet in ways that would affect the survival of all species.

To find out more about ice age mammals and the threats facing us today, select from the following:

Basic Overview
Get the full story on our ongoing ice age and how it has affected and will continue to impact plant and animal life on our planet. You’ll discover how a single species—humans—is now responsible for the current mass extinction of thousands of species around the world.

Image Gallery
View amazing images of ice-age mastodons, cave bears, and other mammals, including many fossils from California’s famous Rancho La Brea tar pits.

Evolutionary Essentials
Discover how biogeography—the study of landmasses and the life they have hosted—have clarified our understanding of mammal evolution.

Featured Scientists
Meet just a few of the more than 200 Field Museum scientists who work to protect our planet’s species from the mass extinction currently facing them.
