Limnogaler mergulus: madagascar's only semiaquatic mammal

Limnogale mergulus, the web-footed or aquatic tenrec, is the only semiaquatic mammal found on Madagascar and represents both a striking example of evolutionary adaptation and a serious conservation concern. One of the most difficult mammals in the world to capture and observe, it is in dire need of field study to ascertain its current distribution and conservation status as human impact continues to threaten its habitat. Because of its unique ecological niche, Limnogale may represent the best indicator of healthy aquatic ecosystems on Madagascar.

We are seeking funding to conduct an innovative yet straightforward investigation into its geographic distribution, habitat preferences, and molecular phylogeography so that a clearer picture of its conservation needs can emerge. The following pages provide a summary of what little is known about the species and what needs to be learned to guarantee its continued existence.
