Myotis ater

(Peters, 1866).

ORDER—CHIROPTERA
FAMILY—Vespertilionidae

COMMON NAME—Peter's Myotis.

DISTRIBUTION—Vietnam and peninsular Malaysia to Sulawesi, the Mollucas and New Guinea. Philippine records from Culion (FMNH) and Luzon (Camarines Sur [USNM]).

HABITAT—Lowland forest from near sea level to at least 1100 m (Sanborn, 1952, Heaney et al., 1999, in prep.).

STATUS––Widespread in Indo-Australia, but poorly known.

COMMENT––Specimens from Culion were originally referred to M. nugax by Sanborn (1952), which is now treated as a subspecies of M. ater (Corbet & Hill, 1992; Simmons, in press). All of the specimens included under Distribution were reported as M. muricola by Heaney et al. (1998), following Koopman (1993) who treated nugax as a synonym of M. muricola.
