Introduction

Forest fragmentation and loss, such as that in numerous Eastern Arc Mountains, has been shown to lead to species extinctions, and thus poses a great threat to the rare and endemic biota of this area. To reduce this threat to biota and to enable dispersal between forest fragments, the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund together with other organizations and partnerships has encouraged the creation of natural corridors to link isolated forest patches. Knowledge on restoring corridors using native vegetation is in its infancy—the scientific application of ecological restoration is poor in tropical forests; however its need is an essential ingredient to gauge future success or failure of this type of conservation implementation.

We anticipate that the seedling identification guide, database on seed germination and seedling growth and other information we provide will assist conservation and restoration programs in the Eastern Arc Mountains, the broader East African region, and elsewhere.
