Seed and Seedling Growth

There is little information that is widely available on seedling identification of African forest plants and scant knowledge on forest regeneration. Furthermore, current plant identification manuals are not very accessible, incomplete, too expensive, or too specialized for widespread use. As a result, little is known about early natural regeneration of Eastern Arc forests, hindering the ability of the managers and the local communities to apply knowledge of early recruitment toward restoration efforts.

To address this lack of information and enhance scientific efforts to understand forest regeneration in the East Usambara Mountains, a comprehensive database on the germination and early growth of tree, shrub and liana seedlings of the East Usambara Mountains is being developed (to be uploaded on this site in 2008). Simultaneously, a comprehensive field-guide to the seedlings of these three different life-forms in the Eastern Arc Mountains is under development.
