Inca Empire
By 1532, the Inca ruled an empire stretching over 3,000 miles along the Pacific coast of South America, from present-day Quito, Ecuador, south to Santiago, Chile. The capital city of Cuzco, located high in the Andes mountains, was home to 40,000 Inca who ruled over more than 10 million people of other ethnic groups. Rulers faced many challenges managing such a large populace that included hundreds of different ethnic groups, languages, cultures, and religions.
