The first humans arrived in the Americas around 13,000 years ago, towards the end of an Ice Age. Archaeologists find evidence (bones, tools, and early campsites) of people living during this time from Alaska in North America to southern Chile in South America.
Like all Ice Age people around the globe, these early "Americans" survived by gathering plants and hunting animals. To bring down giant (and now-extinct) Ice Age mammals, these people fashioned sophisticated stone spear points. Archaeologists can distinguish different groups of people living during this time by the style of points they created.
