Since its founding, the Field Museum has been an international leader in American archaeology and ethnology. The Museum's world class collections of artifacts made by Indigenous peoples of the Americas now include more than 262,980 objects that document the diversity and accomplishments of many different cultures.
In addition, much of the Anthropology Department's scientific staff is dedicated to exploring the development of Indigenous cultures through collections-based research and fieldwork in North, Central, and South America.
