Moche Society
Between AD 100 and 800, the powerful Moche society dominated the north coast of Peru. Like the Maya, the Moche were several smaller kingdoms united by political ties. From the dominant city, also called Moche, elite warrior-priests governed densely populated cities.

The Moche had no written language. But they created an array of painted ceramic vessels that convey much information through their rich images. The vessels offer a unique portrait of the society's spiritual, political, and daily lives.

Take a look at some of the objects that tell us about Moche rulers and citizens and the attributes they share with other governmental societies.
