The file snakes (Acrochordidae) are a tiny group of freshwater and marine snakes that occur from the mouth of the Ganges River to northern Australia. They are thought to be relatively primitive snakes but they share a number of unique characteristics that mask their relationships to other snakes. The relationships among the three living acrochordids, the little file snake (Acrochordus granulatus), the elephant trunk or wart snake (A. javanicus) and the arafura snake (A. arafura) are not well understood. The relationships of acrochordids to other snakes has been included in a recent study by Kelly, et al., 2003 .
