Juan Alberto Román Berrelleza, M.A.
Research Professor
Museo Templo Mayor
For 30 years, Juan Alberto Román Berrelleza has been a Senior Professor and Researcher at the Museo del Templo Mayor, Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia (INAH, National Institute of Anthropology and History) in Mexico City. From his beginnings as a researcher, his main academic interests have focused on the study of cases of human sacrifices, mainly of children, whom have been discovered by the Templo Mayor Project, Tlatelolco and Metropolitan Cathedral. Currently Professor Berrelleza is developing a research project in collaboration with specialists in molecular biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autómoma de México (School of Philosophy and Humanities, UNAM), with the goal of determining through DNA analysis the sex of children sacrificed to the gods of rain.
Among his many publications, Professor Berrelleza is the author of the following books, articles, chapters, and exhibitions catalogues: Sacrificios de Niños en el Templo Mayor (The Sacrifice of Children at the Templo Mayor); “A Case of Child Sacrifice;" "A Study of Skeletal Materials from Tlatelolco;" "An Analysis of Ancient Aztec DNA from Tlatelolco;" "The Role of Children in the Ritual Practices of The Great Temple of Tenochtitlan and the Great Temple of Tlatelolco;" The Templo Mayor at Tenochtitlan, published in the United Status; "Ion Beam Analysis of Ancient Mexican Colored Teeth from Archaeological Sites in Mexico City" and "Pollution Effects on Stone Benches of the Eagle Warriors Precinct at the Templo Mayor, Mexico City," published in the Netherlands; L’uomo e la societá Azteca, published in Italy; and "El rostro y el corazón codificados: Las ofrendas del Templo Mayor de Tenochtitlan," published in Spain.
