Your journey through The Aztec World begins on the bountiful shores of Lake Texcoco and moves to the heart of Tenochtitlan, the Aztecs' vibrant and sophisticated capital city. You'll move from the periphery to the city center, passing farms, homes, and marketplaces before entering the splendor of the central temple district, surrounded by the palaces of the ruling elite.

For a preview of the exhibition experience, check out the highlights below.

Introduction Gallery
Gaze upon Tenochtitlan, the Aztecs' capital city, built on a series of natural and manmade islands in the center of Lake Texcoco. Home to more than 200,000 people, Tenochtitlan was one of the world's largest cities, and today Mexico City sits atop its foundations.

Don't miss:
The Aztec World Intro Video
Listen to legends of the Aztecs, learn about their origin as a people, and view images of their art in this revealing video presentation.

Farmer's Gallery
Meet the foundation of Aztec society—the farmers who supplied food to an empire of millions. Learn how these men and women tamed the forces of nature, sacrificed their own blood, and claimed land from the lake to grow corn and other crops that are staples in our diet today.

Don’t miss:
The "Drunken Rabbit" Vessel
Chuckle over the Aztec sense of humor at this amusing yet artful container for pulque, an alcoholic beverage brewed from the sap of the maguey plant.

Artisans & Merchants' Gallery
Admire spectacular jewelry, pottery, and other works of art, and get a glimpse of the teeming Aztec marketplace, said to rival those of Europe, in the reproduction of Diego Rivera's mural "The Great Market of Tlatelolco."

Don’t miss:
The Gold and Greenstone Display
Marvel at the glimmer of gold and greenstone (even more highly prized than gold), which—by Aztec law—could be owned only by nobility.
