What Midwestern baseball league existed from 1943 to 1954, and served as inspiration for the 1992 feature film A League of Their Own? |
The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) was started by Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley as a response to the large number of young men serving in World War II, and the concern that attendance at Major League parks might fall. Attendance at AAGPBL games reached nearly 1 million by 1948, but later declined for a variety of reasons. During its 12-year history, more than 600 women played as part of the AAGPBL.
While women have had a presence in baseball since its earliest days, their participation has remained limited. Women have played in a variety of leagues and at the college level, owned professional teams, announced play-by-play, served as umpires and been ball girls.
