The Basics of Biodiversity:
How can we protect biodiversity?

Science and conservation go hand in hand. We need to understand how our actions affect the creatures and habitats around us to learn how to properly preserve them.

The Field Museum is an internationally important center for research and education on biodiversity. Our scientists work in laboratories in the Museum and at field sites around the world documenting changes in biodiversity and designing ways to protect it.

Successful conservation includes:
Discovery and Inventory:

First, scientists determine the condition of a site by counting the species they find to learn what plants and animals live there and how they depend upon their habitats.
Analysis and Protection:

Next, scientists use the information they gather to design conservation strategies that protect areas with important biodiversity.
Training and Capacity-building:

Then, scientists share what they have learned by educating future scientists and working with local citizens, scientists, and government officials to implement management plans.
