The Field Museum’s Mission:
Public Outreach: Exhibitions and Education

The Field Museum welcomes more than a million visitors through its doors each year. As both a research institution and an educational organization, the Museum is uniquely equipped to blend science with entertainment.

Our exhibitions and educational programs—as enriching as they are fun—provide hands-on opportunities to explore the web of life and learn how our actions impact the planet.

Conservation-related Exhibitions: includes both permanent and temporary exhibitions are highlighted in our Year of Biodiversity and Conservation

Educational Programs about Biodiversity and Conservation: includes many on-site and remote activities and events

Conservation-related Exhibitions

The Museum hosts more than 20 permanent exhibitions dedicated to nature and more than 16 devoted to human culture. Each combines the research of our world-renown scientific staff with award-winning design to educate the public about biodiversity issues that affect us all.

By examining the Earth’s incredible variety of wildlife, habitats, and cultural customs, these exhibitions reveal the connections that exist between plants, animals, and people.

In addition, the Museum also regularly features temporary exhibitions, such as “Pearls” and “Chocolate,” to highlight up-to-the-minute issues that affect our daily life. Through these fascinating and thought-provoking exhibits, visitors can discover the relationships between popular products and biodiversity.

Educational Programs about Biodiversity and Conservation

The Field Museum’s many educational programs nurture a sense of curiosity and inquiry about how the world works. Field trips, classes, and demonstrations provide visitors of all ages with opportunities to examine and experiment with nature using the tools and techniques of Field Museum scientists.

In addition, the Museum touches countless people beyond the walls of the building through video productions, off-site educational programs, and on-line website resources. Our goal is to equip the public with informed decision-making skills and inspire them to explore, understand, and conserve our planet’s fragile biodiversity.
