Name: Mary Hennen
Position/Title: Collections Assistant - Birds
Department: Zoology

1. What do you study related to biodiversity (what are your research questions, what organisms do you work on)?

I monitor the peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) that nest in the Chicagoland area.

2. How do you study biodiversity (for example, what technological tools and methodologies do you use in your research)?

I use observation and banding.

3. Where do you study biodiversity?

In Chicago and the surrounding area, from Waukegan down to Calumet.

4. How might your research have implications for biological conservation?

The peregrine is an Illinois state endangered species. Monitoring programs are needed to know about population levels and whether the species is breeding successfully. Illinois currently has only 10 breeding pairs of peregrines, all in the Chicago area.

5. How did you become interested in science? What made you want to be a scientist, and how did you get to The Field Museum?

I've always loved the outdoors and animals. I've been working in the bird division as student/volunteer etc since 1989 and was hired into the current position in 2001.
