What Your Museum Does
Pollution Control

Two of the biggest problems our planet faces today are air and ground pollution. Air pollution is changing our climate and killing off many species of plants and animals. Ground pollution contaminates the land with garbage dumps and other harmful waste products that can also eventually enter our water supply.

The Field Museum has a long history of working to address environmental concerns like these through various progressive programs.

  Transportation
  Recycling

Transportation

Since cars produce a considerable amount of air pollution, The Field Museum encourages its employees and visitors to take public transportation to and from the Museum. Free trolleys provide year-round daily service connecting the Museum Campus to downtown, as well as CTA and Metra rail stations and bus stops.

The Museum also promotes cycling to work. In fact, we recently won the 2003 Bicycle Commuter Challenge organized by the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation and designed to promote cycling among the region’s employers.

Recycling

When it comes to recycling, the Field Museum is an old pro. Nearly fifteen years ago, the Museum implemented an extremely aggressive program to collect used corrugated cardboard. In the last three years alone, we’ve recycled 56 tons of cardboard waste.

In addition, we’ve created an extensive recycling program for glass, plastic, mixed paper, and metals. Each year we recycle over 74 tons of paper, hundreds of thousands of beverage bottles and cans, and hundreds of toner and ink cartridges.
