The Harris Loan Center:
DECEMBERIsland Biodiversity
Because of their isolation, islands are home to unique species, many of which are endemicfound nowhere else in the world. Unfortunately, biodiversity on islands is more susceptible to extinction from human activities and natural events, including disease, fire, and populations fluctuations.
During the month of December, well explore these natural laboratories where Field Museum scientists study factors that threaten the survival of island ecosystems.

Coconuts
Middle school and higher
Coconut palms, found throughout the tropics, provide food, shelter, and clothing. Kit includes materials made from the leaves, wood, fiber, and fruit of the coconut.

Maps & Globes: Introduction To New Zealand
Improve map and globe study skills. Kit includes a map showing landforms, population centers, transportation, and rainfall.

Ocean Highways, Ocean Harvests
A video, activities, and a model of an outrigger canoe explain how Pacific Islanders sailed vast oceans without modern navigation equipment.

Sea Life
Pre-K and higher
Examine specimens of sea stars, sponges and shells, mussels, crabs, and cowries. A video shows how invertebrates survive the pounding surf, escape predators, and find food.

Volcanoes
Volcanoes are clues to the constant changes of the earth's surface. Look at pumice, obsidian, and basalt, and find out how they were formed. Volcano model and "Rivers of Fire" videotape are included.
