The Harris Loan Center:
FEBRUARY—Living Waters

Fish, shrimp, and snails provide us with more than just food—they’re also indicators of the health of our freshwater and ocean ecosystems. Join us during the month of February as we explore our Living Waters and the economic and scientific benefits they provide.

From the coral reefs of south Florida and the Philippines, to the deep-sea vents of the Pacific, you’ll learn how Field Museum researchers are studying some of the most species-rich and unique communities on Earth.

To prepare your students for our various exhibits and programs about Living Waters, consider the following Harris Loan materials:

  Experience Boxes
  Exhibit Cases

EXPERIENCE BOXES
Aquatic Insects
Explore the life of a freshwater pond or stream with microscopes and slides. A small diorama shows insect life in the water.
Animal Habitats: Pond Sea Life
Pre-K and primary grades
Use hand puppets—a beaver, fish, dragonfly, and frog—to learn about the pond habitat, and use an audiotape and play to learn about the lifestyles of various animals.
Ocean Highways
A video, activities, and a model of an outrigger canoe explain how Pacific Islanders sailed vast oceans without modern navigation equipment.
