NOVEMBERGenetic Biodiversity
The race to sequence the human genome has made the front pages of newspapers, magazines, and scientific journals worldwide.
Find out how Field Museum scientists use the same cutting-edge techniques to understand the genetic blueprints of Earths animals and plants. Learn how this ability to compare and contrast DNA from different species is revolutionizing our understanding of biodiversity and conservation.

FEATURED SCIENTIST
Kevin Feldheim, Ph.D.
Biologist and Manager, Field Museums Pritzker Laboratory for Molecular Systematics and Evolution
Kevin Feldheim is a biologist and manager of the Pritzker Laboratory for Molecular Systematics and Evolution, a state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to the genetic analysis and preservation of the worlds biodiversity. Genetic analyses of plants and animals in the lab lead to a better understanding of relationships among different populations in endangered habitats, helping to shape conservation plans.
The Pritzker Laboratory provides scientists from around the world with the tools and techniques for constructing the family trees of organisms from fungi and flowering plants to birds and primates. Several new species have been discovered through genetic analyses in the laboratory, including a new species of Brazilian flycatcher found by Field Museum biologist John Bates, Ph.D.

FEATURED EXHIBITION
Evolving Planet
What did the world look like through the eyes of a 500-million-year-old trilobite? What could you see and hear in the swampy forest that was Chicago…300 million years ago? How would it feel to touch the face of our early human cousins?
Evolving Planet takes visitors on an awe-inspiring journey through 4 billion years of life on Earth, from single-celled organisms to towering dinosaurs and our extended human family. Unique fossils, animated videos, hands-on interactive displays, and recreated sea- and landscapes help tell the compelling story of evolutionthe single process that connects everything that’s ever lived on Earth.
Permanent Exhibitionfor more information, visit our Evolving Planet exhibition website.
