Hymenoptera
(bees, wasps, ants)
Wasps of the family Ichneumonidae deposit eggs on certain insects. When the eggs hatch, the larvae eat their host alive. Some species only attack certain crop pests, making some wasps popular for natural pest control among organic farmers.
Some in this group are "social insects", meaning they live in colonies where each member has a specific job and all contribute to its health. Over 99% of social hymenopterans are female. Generally, males are only produced a few times a year to mate with a young queen as she founds a new colony.
