The Curse of the Labrador Duck
Glen Chilton, PhD, Ornithologist and Adjunct Senior Lecturer School of Marine and Tropical Biology, James Cook University
When asked to write about the extinct Labrador Ducks for Birds of North America, Dr. Glen Chilton embarked on a journey to document every taxidermy specimen in the world. Since the duck went extinct since the 1800s and only a few dozen specimens were known to exist, he thought it would be a fairly simple task. However, this routine project quickly grew into an obsessive quest. Join Dr. Chilton as he chronicles an expedition that led him on multiple trips around the world to find exaggerated and fabricated specimens, those lost to war and theft, and even a few complete forgeries. Chilton will share stories of his travels, featuring an assortment of weird and wonderful adventures that are all chronicled in his book The Curse of the Labrador Duck: My Obsessive Quest to the Edge of Extinction.
