Bridging Ethnic Divides (2 of 2)

In addition to St. Kevin's, there are a number of other places in the Calumet Region where people of many ethnicities, generations, class and political backgrounds regularly come together and act in a common interest.

Calumet mapThese include Wolf Lake, Gately Park, Calumet Park, Flatfoot Lake, St. Kevin's Church, East Side United Methodist Church, The Pullman Historical District, downtown Whiting during Pierogi Fest, downtown Hammond during the Arts Inside Out Festival, South East Environmental Task Force gatherings and others...

However, common interests that bring diverse community members across the region together are not always directly attached to place. The following section Community, Action and Everyday Life features assets that were chosen in part because they bridge communities, as well as racial and economic barriers. Here are some themes that bring residents together:

Gardening-- making things grow, and flowering the community.

Recreation-- relaxing and enjoying the area's large amounts of greenspaces, as well as working to conserve those areas.

Organizing and meeting for social, spiritual political, environmental justice, and civic purposes.

Maintaining the health of the economy and starting local businesses.

Celebrating heritage, history and community at local festivals.
