Festivals, parades and fairs are rituals that bring people together common throughout Calumet. These celebrations are sponsored and organized by many different institutions and/or organizations or local groups including block clubs. Festivals centered around historical, ethnic or community based themes, such as Pierogi Fest in Whiting, Indiana and Hobo Fest in Pullman; art as pictured on the left at the Arts Inside Out Festival in downtown Hammond; national holidays and environmentally-oriented themes.

map festivals and parks

  • Festivals demonstrate residents' pride in place and the ability of diverse communities to collaborate on their similar interests.

  • Through festivals, residents and visitors alike are connected to the history of the region as shared experience, whether or not they had any prior knowledge of the area beforehand.

In addition to city streets and private locations, city parks and forest preserves often are the sites of community celebrations.
