Colorful flowers planted by residents paint the neighborhoods of Calumet. Residents are proud of their gardens. Gardens symbolize local knowledge about making things grow in the region, as well as capacity-building, outreach and activism. While many residents plant gardens around their homes, the community gardens we noted during our research are plotted on the map below.

  • Community gardens bring together diverse groups of residents that may not customarily interact.

  • Gardens show that residents who may not belong to environmental organizations are nonetheless concerned and interested in the environment, and they value working in the out-of-doors.

  • Gardens reveal skills and knowledge that residents share with each other and have passed down over generations.
