Wolf Lake is a prominent asset and greenspace in the Lake Calumet Region that bridges the Indiana/Illinois state line. Because of its popularity as a recreation spot, its industrial history, its abundance of biodiversity, and location in two states, many organizations and governmental institutions have interests here. Three major parks are on the lake- William Powers State Conservation Area (Chicago, IL), Forsyth Park (Hammond, IN), Wolf Lake Park (Hammond, IN), - draw over a million people from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds per year. Wolf Lake Park, on the Indiana side of Wolf Lake, is a popular and meaningful recreation point for residents of Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

  • Much research and restoration work occurs in the greenspaces surrounding the lake including:
  • The Burnham Greenway connects Eggers Woods with Chicago's Lake Front Trail and is used by recreational cyclists and bike commuters.

  • Wolf Lake Park hosts a large, informal windsurfing community. Most of the windsurfers come to Indiana from Illinois for the 'great wind' on Wolf Lake.
  • Because swimming is not allowed on Illinois side, people come from Chicago's Southeast Side to swim at Wolf Lake Park in Hammond.
  • Hunting is allowed on the Illinois side of the lake. This is the only hunting spot within the city of Chicago's boundaries.
  • The parks and picnic areas are popular sites for family and friendship celebrations.
  • Fishing is popular on all sides of the lake.
