Geographic Information Systems
A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing things and events that happen on earth. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps.

Global positioning systems were used to make geographically based maps of important places in the research project.

GIS analysis
Geographical information systems were used to map social assets and then compare ethnographic data, geographical information and demographic data (mainly Census data) across the region.
