Health

Residents are concerned with many health issues in the region, including the economic, physical, and natural health in their surroundings. Concerns over pollution and the contamination of greenspace, as well as the effects of pollution on health were reported by nearly every resident with whom we spoke. These concerns were also often a constraint to landuse. To a large extent, residents are confronted with conflicting or limited access to information about which greenspaces are safe to access and which are not. The Body
After years of living next to or on the remains of heavy industry, health is a primary concern of many residents. They have devised numerous creative tactics for dealing with these situations.

Panaderia Gerardo's
Local Economies
Industry was the backbone for the Southeast Side for over a century. By the late 1980's, most of the steel mills had closed. New strategies for community survival in the post-industrial age revolve around small business and the arts.
Liquid Dynamic
Environment
Civic organizations, government employees and local families and individuals acting outside of formal networks all engage in improving the health of their environment. Sometimes priorities of what environment means result in conflicting responses.
