The area surrounding the Brownmill was referred to as 'Irondale' during the early 1900s. It was later renamed 'South Deering' after Charles Deering, the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wisconsin Steel. 'Old-timers' still refer to this area as Irondale. |

- Irish, Welsh, English and Polish Immigrants first settled the area in the late 1800s. In the 1920s a wave of Mexican immigrants settled in the neighborhood.
- South Deering is a triangle-shaped neighborhood located from 103rd Street on the north, Torrance Avenue on the east, and 109th Street and the Chicago & Western Railroad tracks on the south and west. This area borders the former Wisconsin Steel site and primarily consists of a Latino population (~60%).

In addition, the Trumbull Park Homes (2), a Chicago Housing Authority development, is located in South Deering between 105th and 109th Streets west of Torrence Avenue. African American families primarily occupy the Trumbull Park Homes.
