George Washington Carver
February 1 to July 6, 2008

Best known for his work with the peanut plant, George Washington Carver became a legend in his own time. Discover the life and work of an extraordinary man, born into slavery, who used his gifts to become a groundbreaking scientist, educator, and humanitarian with a lifelong mission: to bring practical knowledge to those in need.

Through more than a hundred artifacts, along with videos, interactive displays, and more, you’ll follow along as Carver’s intellect, curiosity, and persistence take him from a remote frontier town to success as a teacher and researcher at the famed Tuskegee Institute.

You’ll discover the roots of Carver’s “mighty vision”—a vision of exhausted fields turning green with crops—and see the laboratory equipment he used to make that vision real. And you’ll see how he laid the groundwork for organic farming and today’s research on plant-based fuels, medicines, and everyday products.

Come explore the complex and intimate portrait of one of America’s best known names in the exhibition George Washington Carver, organized by The Field Museum in collaboration with Tuskegee University and the National Park Service.
