shoes History

Human beings' diverse responses to the concerns of life arise as environment, history, and creativity shape the varieties of human culture.

How do our histories shape our different responses to common concerns?

History is an accumulation of past actions.
It is through the stories, memories, and records of events that we recall the ways in which people interact with their environment and with each other. People are constantly uncovering new information about the past. This changes our understanding of history's influences. Our perceptions of past actions and interactions affect how we will respond to the world in the future.

History is an important factor that shapes our cultural responses. These shoes come from different places, but show a common history: both come from cultures that attach status to elegant displays of immobility among women. The shoes on the left – specimens from late 20th century Chicago – and those on the right – from China one hundred years earlier – share a haughty disregard for the requirements of walking. These formal similarities in footwear point to shared traditions of excluding elite women from the world of work.
