Cultural Connections Event: "Beauty in Action"
The saying “beauty is as beauty does,” means outward appearance matters less than what is inside. But what if outward appearance is what is inside? That is, what if specific elements of appearance are meant to make a social statement, expressing deeply held views?
During the Language of Looks program year, the Brazilian Cultural Center of Chicago (BCCC), DuSable Museum of African American History (DMAAH), and the Italian Cultural Center (ICC) partnered to explore these questions through discussions of how hairstyles, costumes, and dance movements among other aspects of appearance constitute a beauty in action that also bespeaks identity. Presentations included BCCC representative Maria Isabel Leme Harris’s discussion of racial inequality and its social manifestations in Brazil; Gloria Nardini from the ICC speaking on the Italian concept of Bella Figura, or “to make a good figure” effortlessly; and DMAAH representative Hiddekel Burks’s account of African American hair care throughout the decades.
