Mighty Acorns
Site Selection
- The kids really enjoy visiting an area close to home. They feel that they are actually making a difference in their community. Ariel Carillo, Marsh Elementary
Student Preparation & Involvement
- My students followed the pre- and post-activities and had a great time. Each became an expert on an animal, completed a drawing and diorama in its natural habitat, and reported to the class. They are also taking a tree or plant and becoming an expert on it and will report on it to their classmates. Patricia Sierra, Washington Elementary
- Students enjoyed free exploration. Veronica Garcia, Addams Elementary
- Students take notes on and review on-site field trips (mini-quizzes are given the week of the field trip). Christine Harnedy, Grissom Elementary
- Have them set aside materials and have them ready for all activities. Christine Harnedy, Grissom Elementary
- The week of an outing I integrate nature in every content area. This helps to get the students more involved and curious about the actual exploration. Marquitta McGowan, Grissom Elementary
- Do more than just the "required" lesson prior to the field trip. Try to do at least one "extra" lesson. Holly Brown, Marsh Elementary
- Dont teach lessons too far in advance of the trip. Holly Brown, Marsh Elementary
- Bring a clipboard and pencil for each student, it will work better than a notebook. Holly Brown, Marsh Elementary
Curriculum Integration
- Being involved with Mighty Acorns helps students review actual lessons from science book of curriculum, use science vocabulary words such as "decomposers", "scavengers", and "food web/chain", discuss habitats, competition for food, adaptations/survival skills, how seeds travel, and good/bad plants that are in Illinois. Yanina Nevarez, Grissom Elementary
Time Management
- I learned to allow students more time to share because they were excited about what they saw and learned. Veronica Garcia, Addams Elementary
- In the future I will include Mighty Acorns activities in my plans 3 or 4 weeks prior to trip. This will ensure coverage of pre-trip information without rushing. LaMeatrice St. Clair, Addams
- Look into outdoor activities before field trips so students will have something to do. Reyes Calvillo, Marsh Elementary
Lessons Learned & Recommendations
- Re-read lessons (teachers) before presenting activities to students, plan weeks in advance for trips Christine Harnedy, Grissom Elementary
- These activities have given me good insight into nature. I feel that I am learning along with my students. I would say to read up as much as possible about any issue related to nature, because students will have questions and it is good to have answers to these questions. - Reyes Calvillo, Marsh Elementary
