The Field Museum curates over 7,500 rubbings, many of which provide unique insights to Chinese culture, art and history. The following highlights from the collection are arranged by broad categories to provide the public with a better appreciation of the breadth of this outstanding collection.
Please note that the descriptions and dates for the featured rubbings were taken from the Museum's 1982 Fieldiana catalog of the collection. The captions have not been edited for content and include outdated Wade-Giles romanization. Similarly, it should be noted that the ascribed dates refer to the original stone from which the rubbing(s) were taken and not necessarily the date of the rubbing itself. The Museum is currently updating its catalog to address these shortcomings and will be incrementally revising the captions, as better information is available.
