Cleopatra of Egypt : From History to Myth

Explore the Exhibition

You’ve heard of Cleopatra. You may picture her as a richly costumed beauty or a melodramatic actress—gasping her last brave breath as a deadly snake slithers away. Perhaps you know of her romantic liaisons with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, two great rulers of ancient Rome.

But there’s much more to learn.

In Cleopatra of Egypt: From History to Myth, you can explore a complex portrait of one of history’s most fascinating women. Learn about her non-Egyptian heritage, her role as pharaoh and goddess, and how her exotic image affected the styles of ancient Rome.

You’ll see the brilliance of the great city where she ruled, and you’ll follow her shrewd political alliances, her military defeat, and her tragic suicide. By drawing from history and legend, you can paint your own picture of Egypt’s last and most legendary queen.

This exhibition brings together many objects that have never before been exhibited in the United States. Some have only recently been identified as portraits of Cleopatra—adding to the debate over what she really looked like. Cleopatra of Egypt: From History to Myth makes its only stop in North America at Chicago’s Field Museum.

Don’t miss this chance to unravel Cleopatra’s mystery for yourself.
