Goals of the BEATRA Program for Environmental Communication continued
B. Initiation of a new relationship between CRSN, CRH and future generations of Congolese through a public outreach program targeting schools and community groups in the Bukavu/Uvira region.

We are developing a strategy of conservation communication and education centered upon the most important conservation issues facing CRSN, CRH, ICCN, and the region. Public outreach teams will determine specific projects and appropriate subject material that will coincide with programs already established in the region. The program also will rely heavily on experience with successful public outreach programs from The Field Museum. Outreach efforts will include the development of materials that can travel to local villages, group presentations, and the encouragement of visits to see new and refurbished exhibits at the stations and the park headquarters. Mass media will be used both to advertise public programs at the stations and to address important basic issues of how the work of the local institutions can have a positive effect on the local human communities.
C. Enhancement of undergraduate education programs focusing on biodiversity and its conservation.

The universities in Bukavu have existing programs in the biological sciences. These include course work related to biodiversity, but materials will be enhanced. The project will work with university professors to improve opportunities for undergraduates to learn about regional biodiversity. Some of these students will be selected to participate in training programs at the stations.
