The travel time for this road will vary depending on the type of vehicle, but it takes about five to seven hours to reach Cyangugu. There are a several hotels near the border. The border is open from 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. daily. Currently, a US$30 fee is charged for a two-week entry visa, and you must leave your passport at the border. Although the vaccine is no longer considered important in many parts of the world, having documentation of the Cholera vaccine might save you some money.
There used to be a number hotels in Bukavu, but many are no longer functional after so many years with no tourism. A room may run as much as $90/ night. The CRSN, Lwiro station can be reached by hiring a taxi in Bukavu. Make sure that people at the station know you are coming. Lwiro lies 40 km to the northwest of Bukavu, and it will take over an hour on a rough partially paved road. The road also passes the turnoff to Tchivanga, the main station for Kahuzi-Biega National Park. The Tchivanga fork goes through the park and continues west to Irangi, the site of a former research facility in the Congo Basin (and the former cottage the of Belgian King Leopold II). The CSRN, Lwiro station is only 4 km from the edge of Kahuzi-Biega National Park.
