Informal arts: The use of the term informal arts draws upon the work of the Center for Arts Policy Studies at Columbia College, Chicago. They define informal arts as “popular creative activities that fall outside of the conventional commercial and non-profit arts experiences. They are inclusive activities, characterized by low barriers to participation, and usually occur in informal and inviting settings. Unlike the formal arts, where participation involves buying tickets to be part of an audience, often at an institutional site, participation in the informal arts is hands-on.” Social scientists sometimes use the term participatory arts and informal arts interchangeably.
Social assets: Social assets are the relationships people create to address the needs of everyday life. Assets are revealed through ethnographic data gathering techniques, such as participant observation and interviews. For more on social assets and an assets-based approach to social research, visit The Field Museum’s Journey through Calumet website.
Social networks: The term “social networks” refers to “the relationships that exist between groups of individuals or agencies, and the resources to which membership of such groups facilitates access.” This and other social network analysis definitions can be found in A glossary of terms for navigating the field of social network analysis.
