With Our Hands: Crafting Culture

Each year, the Cultural Connections program explores a different cross-cultural theme as a window into understanding other cultures and our own.

In 2003-04, program participants investigated how every culture has characteristic forms of handcrafts, expressive of values and attitudes. Through these artistic creations, such as ceremonial masks, religious icons, traditional regalia, and basket and cloth weaving, people give concrete form to beliefs, practices, and stories. Handcrafts are used in a wide variety of ways. They may be focal points of grand occations such as weddings and festivals. They may also be mundane objects used in everyday life, such as handmade quilts and ceramic vessels, which are as valuable for their usefulness as they are for their beauty.
