Exhibition Walk-through, Continued

The Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice DNA Discovery Center is ahead of its time. Here you can explore the Museum’s Pritzker Laboratory—the first molecular systematics facility in the country open to public viewing! For a preview of the exhibition experience, check out the highlights below.

Introduction to DNA
Need a refresher on DNA? Check out the DNA overview video, narrated by William Petersen, star of the television program CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Through the video and surrounding hands-on interactives, you’ll learn the basics of genetics and discover the structure and location of DNA found in every living organism.

Don't miss:
The 3-D Interactive Models
Larger-than-life interactive models let you examine a DNA molecule to understand its structure and explore the cells of plants and animals to discover where DNA is located.

The Pritzker Laboratory
The DNA Discovery Center is the public face of the Pritzker Laboratory, which was established at The Field Museum in 1974 for genetic research and to study and help preserve the world’s biodiversity. In the last decade alone, over 184 scientists from 29 countries have been trained here, studying everything from mega sharks to microscopic algae. Videos and displays explain the process of DNA sequencing and reveal the significance of the scientists’ work.

Don't miss:
The Laboratory Viewing Area
Through an expanse of windows, you can see first-hand how DNA is extracted from specimens, amplified, sequenced, and then analyzed. On weekdays, a DNA educator/researcher will be on hand for an hour each day to answer questions and describe discoveries in the lab as they unfold before your eyes.
