Runnin' on Sun (grades 6th-8th)

Show your students the increasingly popular technology that plants have been quietly operating by for years. The Field Museum’s environmental educators will introduce your students to the world of energy that comes from the sun. Students will experiment with passive solar and the properties of heat and energy. Engaging in hands-on activities that subtly incorporate common topics in the earth sciences and important skills such as graphing and charting, your students will also be introduced to the methods of capturing light as energy and how the rapidly growing technology of solar directly impacts their world!

From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank (grades 6th-8th)

Can you really run a car on used French fryer oil? Your students will learn the how and why of the diesel engine and the difference between vegetable oil and bio-diesel from The Field Museum’s own veggie diesel van and bio-diesel go-kart! Students will also gain and understanding of the importance of fuel sources in every day life and how they can make small changes in their own lives that make a big difference overall.

The Sun: free photons for the last 4.5 billion years (grades 9th-12th)

The role of the sun in providing energy –both as heat as well as light –will be the main theme of this program that focuses on the physics of electricity. Students will conduct experiments using gauges and meters that show differences both AC and DC forms of electricity. They will interact with solar panels and the technology of photovoltaic cells and learn the magic behind their ability to capture the particles of light and transform them. Most importantly, they will develop ways of incorporating this renewable energy into their lives and understand its importance in counteracting climate change!

Planet Drive (grades 9th-12th)

What’s the difference between bio-diesel and vegetable oil? What is a fuel cell? Why would anyone drive an electric car? What is a better fuel source: corn or switch grass? Why? The Field Museum’s environmental educators will de-mystify the myriad choices of alternative fuels and vehicles for your soon-to-be-licensed students while providing real-life examples of ways to address climate change and individual behavior change in accessible ways.

Fairs and Festivals

The Renewable Energy Vehicle also comes to fairs and festivals! The Field Museum’s Environmental Educators will staff the van, provide mini-demonstrations on solar and alternative fuels and answer the questions of your festival guests. Cost is $100 per hour. Weekend events are subject to staff availability.
