SAM Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What does the SAM experience look like?
A: The SAM program looks different for each grade level. Students may be divided into small groups, work hands-on with various content focus areas, may engage in independent inquiry, may see and touch live critters, and may gain information via a presentation format.

Q: How many students may participate?
A: A maximum of 30 students per program. (Microscope programs require some additional space and arrangements to accommodate entire classes.) Please inquire when registering. Order the appropriate number of programs to facilitate additional students.

Q: How large is the SAM truck?
A: The truck requires a 35-foot parking space.

Q: Will children enter the truck?
A: No, students will work with activity stations in an outdoor space adjacent to the truck, or inside your building.

Q: Will there be a mess?
A: Children will get their hands dirty, but not much else. Some light sweeping by custodial staff may be necessary.

Q: What happens if it rains?
A: The programs can be conducted indoors in a program space such as a classroom or gymnasium. A program space in case of rain is required. Wheelchair access to the building, with standard ramps and door widths, is required to bring the carts indoors.

Q: What’s the farthest SAM will travel?
A: SAM has been as far away as St. Louis! Travel fees above apply to sites within 100 miles. Longer trips can be arranged (and hotel accommodations may be required). Call 312.665.7519 or email soiladventuremobile@fieldmuseum.org for more information.

Q: Is SAM only for schools?
A: SAM can be brought to non-school programs at parks, libraries, fairs or community centers. Call 312.665.7519 for more information.

Q: Can I request a SAM program during our visit to the Museum?
A: Yes, a SAM class can be scheduled at the Museum and will include a tour of the Underground Adventure plus the content you wish to focus on. Microscope classes are recommended. Allow a minimum of two hours for such a program. Please email soiladventuremobile@fieldmuseum.org to register.

Q: What other outreach programs does The Field Museum provide?
A: The Harris Educational Loan Program offers Exhibit Cases, Experience Boxes and other educational materials on loan to Chicago-area schools and families. Materials cover one of three content areas: earth sciences, culture, and biology. Available materials can be viewed online or by calling 312.665.7555.

Q: What other Student Programs does The Field Museum offer?
A: You can bring your students to the Museum for special classes on Egypt, Africa, Soil, Fossils, Evolution and Ancient Americas! We’ve got student programs for all ages, from pre-K through high school. Email studentprograms@fieldmuseum.org for more information.

Q: How much does it cost?
Cost is $4 per student. Maximum 40 students with 3-5 chaperones.
