The pharaoh himself financed workshops where artisans and scribes were educated and employed. Central control of the scribal school system ensured that Egyptian artistic conventions remained uniform throughout the kingdom for more than 3,000 years.

However, there was always room for the sensibility and skill of the master artist. The wealthiest, most powerful patrons usually employed the finest talents.

The importance of the Egyptian artists’ schools and workshops is unquestionable, however. Each time the kingdom fell into disarray, the workshops disappeared … and the quality of art suffered mightily. Each time the kingdom was reunited, the schools and workshops were quickly re-established and the older art styles were revived.
