top imageThe Old Kingdom
3rd – 6th Dynasties, ca. 2686 - 2181 B.C.
Explore the age of the pyramids, a time of intense artistic activity that led to monumental tomb sculptures and the earliest known portraits. See how artistic styles changed as Egyptian society grew larger and more complex.
    Don’t miss:
Nude Figure of the Seal Bearer Tjetji
This carved wood figure, beautifully supple and sophisticated in form, is at once naturalistic and symbolic.

The Middle Kingdom
11th – 13th Dynasties, ca. 2040 - 1650 B.C.
The collapse of the Old Kingdom was followed by approximately 150 years of civil disorder. Mentuhotep II, a Theban ruler, reunified Egypt around 2040 B.C. with the goal of reviving her glorious past. See how the artistic styles of the Old Kingdom are brought back, but with a new flavor and some innovations.
    Don’t miss:
    Standing Statue of Sesostris III
Standing in a prayerful pose, this granite statue is one of the most famous in The British Museum. The body is youthful, but the face is deeply lined, with a hauntingly somber expression that reflects an era when society had lost faith in the goodness of people.

18th Dynasty, ca. 1550 - 1295 B.C.
Examine masterpieces from Egypt’s political and artistic peak, when unprecedented wealth and power made Egypt the greatest empire the world had ever known.
    Don’t miss:
    Lion of Amenhotep III
This stately, life-sized, red granite lion is a remarkable blend of abstraction and realism.

    Head of Amenhotep III
This colossal quartzite head once gazed downward from a great height, as befit a pharaoh who ruled from a position of strength and was determined to be seen as nothing less than a god.
