Biological evolution is the idea that populations experience small genetic changes from one generation to the next. Over time and through the process of natural selection, these small changes can add up to big changes overall, including the emergence of a new species.

Essentially every living thing is connected through a single process—evolution. It’s the only scientifically accepted and strongly corroborated theory we have to explain the amazing diversity of life on Earth today and throughout Earth’s history.

The concept of biological evolution is important to science—and to you—for many different reasons. For science, it provides natural and concrete explanations for why species have changed over time.
