Basic Overview

Water World

Welcome to a world of water. Life in the Cambrian Period may look odd at first. Immense, shallow oceans covered much of the ancient continents. But take a closer look. It’s more familiar than it might seem.

Most animal groups living today evolved in the Cambrian seas.
After more than three billion years of evolution, from single cells to multi-cellular life, an “explosion” of life happened in Earth’s shallow seas. Nearly all the major animal groups we are familiar with first appeared in this period.

Everything living today—from birds to insects to horses to humans to plants—has an evolutionary history that can be traced back to the Cambrian.

New important features, such as skeletons, first appeared.
Among the new animal groups, many had developed skeletons (plates, shells, and bones) and other new features that would change the shape of life forever.
