You belong to the animal group called hominids. A relative newcomer species on the planet, hominids first made an appearance about eight million years ago during the late Tertiary Period. This group includes not only modern humans, but also many other hominid species that once lived on Earth.
While there are gaps in the fossil record, each new find helps build a better portrait of human evolution. And although this picture can be controversial, scientists agree on two key points: hominids evolved from an ape ancestor, and they evolved through the same unpredictable process as every other living thing.
Take a look at some of the fossils and specimens that help clarify the origins of humankind.
